What's new

Every change to CuppaData, newest first.

2.0: a coach for every bag

CuppaData is now built around the bag you're on. Add it, brew with the guide, say how it tasted, and get the one change to make next time, until the bag tastes the way you like it.

Dial in each bag

  • Coffee first. Getting started asks which coffee you're brewing, then your brewer and grinder. If other people brew it, your very first cup starts from their recipe, in your grinder's numbers.
  • Bags. Find the coffee and its details fill themselves in, with a photo of the bag. Then just the roast date, size and price, with what you paid last time suggested. New coffee? Snap the label and your phone reads what it can. Buying the same coffee again finishes the old bag for you.
  • Two bags on the go. An espresso blend next to a filter coffee? Today shows the other open bag too, with its next cup one tap away.
  • Your next cup. After each cup, two taps: sour, balanced or bitter, and weak, right or strong. The coach answers with one change, like one click finer.
  • Brew mode. Step-by-step pours with big numbers you can read from across the kitchen, a chime at each step, and your screen stays on.
  • Bluetooth scales. Connect an Acaia, Decent, Felicita, Bookoo or Timemore scale and brew mode follows your pours: the timer starts with the first pour, a chime tells you when to stop, and the water you actually poured is saved. Works in Chrome on Android and on computers.
  • Your grinder, translated. Recipes show grind settings in your own grinder's numbers, converted from each grinder's published grind chart. Now including the Baratza Sette 30, and the Hario V60 Switch as a brewer of its own.
  • No signal? Keep brewing. If the connection drops, your cup and how it tasted are saved on your phone and upload when you're back online. The brew screen opens offline once you've used it.
  • Reminders. Too hot to taste? Ask for a reminder in 10 minutes. Works on Android and computers, and on iPhone once CuppaData is on your Home Screen. Turn it off in More.
  • One tap in the morning. Start brewing on Today goes straight into the guided brew, with the whole recipe and the coach's change at the top.
  • Brewing for two. A cups stepper scales coffee and water together, and your one-cup recipe stays as it was.
  • Next step when you're ready. In brew mode, tap "Poured, next step" the moment you hit the target, and the rest of the plan moves with you.
  • Rate any cup. "Tasted like usual" still lets you give that cup its own rating.
  • Cost per cup. Add what a bag cost to see the price of each cup, and what dialing it in cost you.
  • Today. Opens on your next cup, and tells you when a bag is running low or past its best.
  • Insights. How many cups each bag took to dial in, what your best cups have in common, and your ratings by brewer, roast, origin and process.

Brew with everyone

  • Coffee pages. Every coffee has a public page: how people brew it on each brewer, the grind in your grinder's numbers, what people learned dialing it in, when it tastes best after roasting, what it costs, your own best cup of it, and coffees like it. Brew it now guides you pour by pour, no account needed.
  • What to buy next. Explore suggests coffees you haven't had, like the origins and processes you rate highest.
  • Explore. Browse every coffee on CuppaData. Search by roaster, origin, process or a flavour like "floral", and filter by roaster, origin and process.
  • For roasters. Create a page for a coffee with your recommended recipe, and get a QR code for the bag. New brewers start from your recipe until the community has its own. Roaster pages list all your coffees, with a printable sheet of QR codes.
  • Recipes from well-known brewers. Four of James Hoffmann's methods, from his Ultimate V60 to his French press, written up step by step. Brew mode times every pour and scales it to your dose.
  • Scan and brew. Scan the QR code on a bag and go straight from the coffee's page to your first cup, with the recipe filled in.
  • Start from others. When you add a bag someone else has dialed in, your first cup starts from their recipe instead of a guess.
  • Your year in coffee. Every bag you opened this year, laid out on a table. Tap one to turn it over: what the label says, when you opened and finished it, the cup you dialed it in on, your best recipe and what a cup cost. Share it at cuppadata.com/u/yourname/year.
  • Much more gear. French presses, espresso machines, capsule machines, siphons, dozens more grinders, kettles and scales. Or just pick plain "French press" or "Hand grinder". Over 50 grinders now convert recipes into their own settings, including Niche Zero, Fellow Opus, DF64, Baratza Vario and Breville Smart Grinder Pro.
  • Hundreds of coffees to start from. Current coffees from roasters across India, Europe and the US, from Blue Tokai and Subko to La Cabra and Onyx, kept up to date each month. Find yours when you add a bag.
  • Tell us. Ideas, bugs or something you miss: send them from the More page, straight to the person who makes CuppaData.
  • Ask for missing gear. Grinder, brewer or scale not listed? Ask for it on the Gear page, and you'll see a note there when it's added, with its grind chart or Bluetooth support.
  • Your setup page. Add everything you brew with, down to the server, cups, tamper, filters, water and canister. Pick from over 60 common accessories or add your own, then share your setup at cuppadata.com/u/yourname/setup.
  • Share a cup. Make a recipe card image of any cup to share, and get a public page with your recipes. You can keep your recipes to yourself in More.
  • Open data. The typical recipe for each brewer, the most brewed coffees and popular grinders, from everyone who shares.
